Meta's AI Bias Advisor Sparks Outrage Over Online Posts

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is facing scrutiny over the appointment of Robby Starbuck as an advisor on AI bias. This follows a settlement in August after Starbuck threatened legal action against Meta, concerning claims made about him by Meta AI. Since his appointment, Starbuck's online activity has drawn criticism, with accusations of spreading misinformation and divisive rhetoric.

Starbuck, known for his anti-DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) stance, has allegedly used his platforms to:

  • Make unsubstantiated claims about the motivations of shooters, linking them to leftist ideologies.
  • Label faith-based protest groups as communist.
  • Connect Democratic lawmakers to alleged murders without providing evidence.

Critics argue that Starbuck's appointment and continued online behavior undermine Meta's commitment to creating safe and inclusive online spaces. Concerns have been raised about the potential impact on marginalized communities, particularly LGBTQ+ individuals, given Starbuck's history of anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric.

Heidi Beirich, co-founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism, expressed her concern about the appointment of Starbuck. She stated that his actions could compromise the safety and inclusivity of Meta's platforms, particularly for the LGBTQ+ community, given his track record of spreading misinformation and denying the existence of transgender people.

Eric Bloem, vice-president of corporate citizenship at the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of safe online communities and highlighting the dangers of Starbuck's anti-LGBTQ+ agenda.

The Lawsuit and Settlement

Starbuck's advisory role stemmed from a dispute over Meta AI's portrayal of him. A screenshot circulated online suggested Meta AI identified him as a QAnon supporter who participated in the January 6th Capitol attack. Starbuck, denying these claims, threatened legal action. The subsequent settlement led to his appointment as an advisor, tasked with addressing ideological and political bias in Meta's AI.

A joint statement on X from Meta's Joel Kaplan and Starbuck highlighted their collaborative efforts to improve the accuracy of Meta AI and mitigate bias. However, critics remain skeptical about the effectiveness and appropriateness of this partnership.

Starbuck's Online Activity Under Scrutiny

Since assuming his role, Starbuck's online conduct has continued to be a focal point of contention. He has amplified vaccine disinformation, supported far-right figures, and promoted pro-Trump narratives.

His statements regarding Portland city officials and anti-fascist groups have been particularly controversial. Starbuck has claimed that city officials are collaborating with "terrorists" and appeared to encourage violent responses.

His allegations have been strongly refuted by Portland councillors who asserted that his claims are based on misinformation and outright lies.

Connecting Shootings to Political Ideologies

In recent weeks, Starbuck has faced criticism for attempting to link alleged perpetrators of high-profile shootings to the Democratic party. He has characterized these incidents as "domestic terrorism" carried out by leftists. However, the evidence supporting these connections is often weak or non-existent.

While some individuals involved in these incidents have expressed anti-Trump sentiments or leanings towards the left, there is no concrete evidence to suggest their actions were motivated by a coordinated political agenda.

Starbuck maintains his claims and argues that he is highlighting a surge in left-wing violence, accusing media outlets of downplaying this issue. He also stated that he receives death threats and claimed the media is complicit in encouraging the violence.

Dhillon Law Group Involvement

The lawsuit that led to Starbuck's involvement with Meta was filed by Dhillon Law Group (DLG), a firm with ties to the Trump administration. The firm argued that Meta's chatbot had made defamatory statements about Starbuck.

Harmeet Dhillon, the founder of DLG, has served as Donald Trump's assistant attorney general for civil rights. Concerns have been raised about potential conflicts of interest, given Dhillon's previous ownership in DLG and her continued interest in contingency fee cases handled by the firm.

The Justice Department has denied that Dhillon currently has any role in cases involving Starbuck.

Critics argue that Starbuck's appointment and the involvement of figures with strong political affiliations raise concerns about Meta's commitment to unbiased AI development and content moderation.
