VW Hikes 2026 Prices Amid Tariff Pressures
The automotive landscape is facing headwinds in 2025, with dynamic import tariffs impacting both manufacturers and consumers. Volkswagen has announced price increases for select 2026 models, with some seeing a rise of nearly 7 percent, including the popular Taos SUV. On top of that, the cost to transport vehicles from port to dealerships is also increasing by $50.
These price jumps are largely attributed to a 15 percent tariff currently in place on German imports. While not all VW models will be affected equally due to varying countries of origin, increases are expected across the board due to tariffs on imported parts such as engines and transmissions. Audi, Volkswagen's luxury counterpart, will also see a price increase of 3.7 percent. This translates to some 2026 Audi models costing up to $4,700 more than their 2025 predecessors.
A Closer Look at 2026 Volkswagen Pricing
Here's a breakdown of how these tariffs will impact the starting prices of several 2026 Volkswagen models:
- Jetta S: Starting at $25,270, a $1,050 increase from 2025.
- Taos (FWD): Starting at $27,975, a $1,055 increase from 2025.
- Atlas SE (FWD): Now $40,785.
- Atlas Cross Sport (FWD): Now $39,775.
The Jetta and Taos see smaller increases (around 4 percent) because they are manufactured in Mexico. The Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, built in Chattanooga, Tennessee, experience roughly a 3 percent increase, mainly due to engines sourced from Mexico.
Models imported from Germany are bearing the brunt of the tariffs:
- Golf GTI: Now $35,865.
- Golf R: Now $50,730.
The Golf GTI experiences a significant 6.5 percent increase, while the Golf R sees an increase of nearly 5 percent. Pricing for the Tiguan, VW's bestselling SUV, is still to be announced, but an increase is anticipated, as it is assembled in Mexico.
