Audi Q5 & SQ5: Refined, Quiet, But Not a Finalist

Audi's latest generation Q5 and SQ5 have arrived, boasting a fresh platform, updated styling, and significant technological advancements. While previous iterations struggled to distinguish themselves in the competitive compact luxury SUV market, often trailing rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLC and BMW X3, this new generation presents a more polished package. Audi has focused on enhancing technology, improving cabin quietness, and delivering a smoother overall driving experience.
A Compelling Offering with Refined Dynamics
Features editor Christian Seabaugh found the new Q5 and SQ5 cohort to be particularly impressive. He noted that while not the most expensive option, it delivers exceptional value and successfully fulfills Audi's core mission for the model. The vehicle is described as both engaging and luxurious.
Judges were highly impressed by the refined suspension system present in both the Q5 and SQ5. It adeptly handles imperfect road surfaces, minimizing disturbances within the cabin. Both tested vehicles were equipped with air springs – an optional feature on the Q5 and standard on the SQ5 – which significantly contribute to their composed ride quality. The German SUVs also earned commendations for their remarkably quiet cabins, effectively shutting out intrusive wind noise. Senior editor Aaron Gold remarked on the exceptional quietness, stating it was among the most serene vehicles he had encountered.
Powertrain Prowess and Performance Potential
The Q5's 268-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo-four engine garnered positive remarks from judges. However, it was the SQ5's more potent 362-hp turbocharged V-6 that truly captured attention. Both engines are paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, channeling power to all four wheels via Audi's renowned Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Features editor Scott Evans likened the SQ5's performance to that of a Porsche, suggesting that its sporty ride quality is well-supported by its handling capabilities.
Areas for Improvement and Future Considerations
Despite the notable upgrades, neither the Q5 nor the SQ5 managed to secure a spot as a finalist in the evaluation. Some judges felt the Q5, particularly the $63,290 Prestige trim, fell short in terms of overall value. While the SQ5 demonstrated strengths in several key areas, it lacked a certain distinctive spark to truly set it apart from the competition.
Usability was another area identified for potential enhancement. Although the cabin offers a respectable amount of space, some testers found ingress and egress to be somewhat awkward. Additionally, the steering wheel occasionally obstructed access to certain controls located near the expansive 14.5-inch infotainment screen. The voice assistant also did not meet expectations when compared to rivals. Associate editor Billy Rehbock shared an anecdote of the system failing to interpret a simple request to navigate to a sandwich shop.
Meeting Expectations, But Not Exceeding Them
For many consumers, the Q5 and SQ5 will undoubtedly meet their needs, offering a comfortable, quiet, and capable experience for daily commuting. However, when measured against the rigorous standards of MotorTrend's 2026 SUV of the Year competition, "good" was not quite enough. In a field characterized by bold designs, cutting-edge technology, and exceptional value propositions, the Audi offerings appeared somewhat conservative. The Q5's price-to-content ratio could be a deterrent for some, while the SQ5, despite its performance advantages, requires a bit more to feel truly exceptional. While solid vehicles, they did not significantly advance the conversation in a contest demanding groundbreaking innovation.
This assessment was part of the comprehensive 2026 SUV of the Year testing, which evaluates vehicles across six critical criteria: efficiency, design, safety, engineering excellence, value, and performance of intended function. All vehicles participating in the evaluation were either all-new or had undergone significant revisions.
