Toyota's Century: A Bold Leap into Ultra-Luxury Market

Forget the supercar rumors; Toyota has launched Century, a new ultra-luxury brand poised to challenge the likes of Rolls Royce and Bentley. The Century One of One Concept, a bespoke coupe-SUV, embodies this ambition with a design that pushes boundaries and redefines expectations for Japanese automotive luxury.
This isn't your typical luxury SUV. Century opted for a coupe-like silhouette, blending muscular aesthetics with modern design cues. The vehicle boasts a high ride height and large wheels, hinting at its imposing presence. The sloping coupe roofline extends towards the rear, and notably, the absence of a rear window suggests a departure from conventional SUV design.
A key feature of the One of One Concept is its unique door configuration. On the passenger side, a pair of sliding doors creates an expansive opening, while the driver's side utilizes traditional hinged doors. The sliding doors, with a forward-opening larger door and a rearward-sliding smaller door, offer exceptional access. A deploying step bar further enhances ease of entry.
Inside, the driver commands the vehicle with a yoke-style steering wheel, separated from the unique passenger layout by a center console.
The concept introduces an unconventional seating arrangement. The front passenger seat is positioned rearward of the driver's seat, providing limousine-like legroom. The remaining space in the rear suggests accommodation for at least one, possibly two, additional passengers. The exact configuration and legroom provisions for these rear occupants remain a point of intrigue.
Powertrain details for the Century One of One remain undisclosed. The lack of visible tailpipes in rear images, coupled with a central hump in the passenger compartment floor, raises questions about its propulsion system. While a battery-electric powertrain is a possibility, a conventional engine or hybrid setup also seems plausible.
Century will debut at the Japan Mobility Show. Positioned above Lexus in Toyota Motor Company's hierarchy, Century represents Toyota's foray into the ultra-luxury segment. Much like the original Lexus LS, Century aims to disrupt the luxury market. Further details about Century and the One of One Concept are anticipated closer to the show, as Toyota prepares to redefine Japanese luxury.
