Michael Douglas Returns to Karlovy Vary with Restored 'Cuckoo's Nest'

Michael Douglas will grace the 59th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) this year, participating in a significant celebration of cinematic history. The acclaimed actor and producer will present a special gala screening of a newly restored version of Miloš Forman's iconic film, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, marking its 50th anniversary.

Douglas, who won the Academy Award for Best Picture as one of the film's producers, will personally introduce the restored print within the festival's "Out of the Past" section. He will be joined by Paul Zaentz, nephew of the late co-producer Saul Zaentz, and members of director Miloš Forman's family. The 1975 film, starring Jack Nicholson, achieved legendary status by sweeping the major Oscar categories – Best Picture, Best Director (Forman), Best Actor (Nicholson), Best Actress (Louise Fletcher), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Lawrence Hauben and Bo Goldman) – a feat only accomplished once before.

The screening holds deep significance for KVIFF, reflecting its enduring connection to the film and its creators. Forman was a steadfast supporter of the festival, and he, alongside Douglas, Saul Zaentz, and actor Danny DeVito (who also appeared in the film), are all past recipients of KVIFF's prestigious Crystal Globe award for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema. This event reinforces the festival's historical ties to this cinematic landmark.

Douglas's appearance marks his return to Karlovy Vary for the first time since 1998, when he and Saul Zaentz were honored with the Crystal Globe. Festival executive director Kryštof Mucha emphasized the importance of the occasion, stating, "The presence of Michael Douglas, Paul Zaentz, and the Forman family will make this an unforgettable moment in the festival's history." The presentation of the restored One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest stands as a major highlight of the upcoming festival edition.
