Cate Blanchett to Receive Icon Award at Camerimage

Celebrated actress Cate Blanchett, a two-time Academy Award winner, is set to be honored with the prestigious Icon Award at this year's Camerimage film festival, an event dedicated to celebrating the artistry of cinematography.

The acclaimed Australian performer will be present at Camerimage in Toruń, Poland, to accept the award during the festival's closing gala. Camerimage 2025 is scheduled to run from November 15th to 22nd.

Throughout her impressive three-decade-plus career, Blanchett has collaborated with some of cinema's most talented cinematographers. Her breakthrough role in "Elizabeth" (1998) not only earned her an Academy Award nomination but also garnered cinematographer Remi Adefarasin an Oscar nomination and the coveted Golden Frog at Camerimage. Ed Lachman's visual artistry in Todd Haynes' "I'm Not There" (2008) was recognized with the Bronze Frog at Camerimage, and his work on Haynes' "Carol" (2015) received an Academy Award nomination. Notably, Blanchett herself earned Oscar nominations for both "I'm Not There" and "Carol." More recently, Florian Hoffmeister secured the top prize at Camerimage for his work on Todd Field's "Tár" (2022), a film that earned Blanchett her eighth Oscar nomination.

Marek Żydowicz, the festival director of Camerimage, expressed his admiration for Blanchett, stating, "Some artists possess a unique ability to captivate audiences with their talent and charisma, leaving an indelible mark on the world of cinema. Cate Blanchett is undoubtedly one such artist. Her sensitivity and dedication to her craft allow her to create memorable characters and infuse every project with a distinct atmosphere. Her performances are truly inspiring."

Blanchett's connection to Camerimage extends beyond receiving this year's Icon Award. She served as the chairperson of the competition jury in the previous year, awarding the Golden Frog to Danish cinematographer Michal Dymek for his exceptional work on Magnus von Horn's period horror drama, "The Girl with the Needle." In 2023, Warwick Thornton won the festival's highest honor for his cinematography in "The New Boy," a film he also directed and which Blanchett produced through her company, Dirty Films.
